Fernando Brito e Abreu
Fernando Brito e Abreu holds a Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from IST/UL and is an Associate Professor at the Department of Information Sciences and Technologies (DCTI) at Iscte-IUL, where he has held various positions such as Director of the Master’s Degree in Computer Science and Management (MIG), member of the Scientific Council of Iscte-IUL, representing the ISTAR-IUL research unit, and responsible for the internationalization of the DCTI. Previously, he was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at FCT/UNL. He has also taught at ISEGI/UNL (now NOVA IMS), IST/UTL, ISEG/UTL, and the Air Force Academy. He was also a guest lecturer at the Département Informatique of the École des Mines de Nantes for a decade as part of the European Master’s program EMOOSE. In these universities, he taught and was responsible for more than a dozen subjects in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd cycle. He has supervised almost 40 theses, including 6 ongoing PhD theses on smart tourism / smart cities related topics.
He has written more than two hundred scientific and technical texts, including articles in journals such as Empirical Software Engineering, Software Quality Journal, Archives of Computational Methods in Engineering, Science of Computer Programming, Journal of Systems and Software, IEEE Latin America, Object Expert, Computer Standards & Interfaces, ERCIM News, Personal Computer World, L’Objet, Qualirama, Sistemas de Informação and Interface. His work has been cited nearly 4K times, with an h-index of 30, according to Google Scholar. His research group QUASAR (QUantitative Approaches in Software Engineering And Reengineering) pioneered empirical software engineering in Portugal.
Since 2020, he has led or co-led several funded national and international projects on ICT for sustainability topics, such as digital transformation of tourism and tourism overcrowding mitigation (covering aspects such as agent-based simulation, real-time detection, 3D spatio-temporal visualization, and sustainability assessment).
