Alfonso has gained over a decade of experience working at the University of Málaga, participating dozens of projects related to tourism, with a focus on Andalusia. He is working on the "Smart Tourism Destinations" project, an initiative supported by the European Commission to enhance tourism services and experiences through innovative digital solutions in EU cities.

He has been the University of Málaga's contact person in the NECSTouR network since 2019, which aims to promote competitive and sustainable tourism in European regions.

Alfonso is also involved in research projects on overtourism and crime against tourists with colleagues from Spanish universities. His main research focus is the relationship between tourism and information and communication technologies (ICT) in Andalusia, which was the topic of his doctoral thesis. Now he is expanding his research into areas such as security in tourism, smart destinations, food tourism and platform economies on tourism.

He also serves as a reviewer for international academic tourism journals and has extensive experience as a member of the organizing board for the International Conference of Tourism & Information Technology TURITEC. Over the last four years, he has also worked as an assistant professor in tourism and gastronomy.
